Colts Falcons Odds
The Atlanta Falcons could potentially select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft, but it’s not a position of immediate need. Since several other teams around the league are in desperate need of a QB, the Falcons’ best option could be to trade back and acquire additional picks.
This is precisely what the team does in a new mock draft from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson. Atlanta sends the No. 4 pick to Carolina in exchange for two third-round picks — one in 2021 and another in 2022 — and the Panthers’ first-round pick (No. 8 overall) this year.
Then, Wilson has the Falcons drafting tight end Kyle Pitts out of Florida.
Falcons fans get increasingly angry with every mock in which we have them targeting a QB, so this week we have Atlanta trading down and landing arguably the best pass catcher in this class, tight end Kyle Pitts. The team currently has one TE under contract (Hayden Hurst through 2021) and adding a playmaker like Pitts fills an obvious need with an elite player.
Wilson’s logic here is that Hayden Hurst’s contract is nearly up, and there isn’t another tight end on the roster. If you throw in Arthur Smith’s background as a tight ends coach and considering his scheme’s heavy use of play-action passing, it does make sense.
The 6-foot-6, 245-pound former Gator had 43 receptions, 770 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 2020, while averaging 17.9 yards per catch. Check out some footage of Pitts going up against Missouri below.
As much fun as it is to imagine adding a tight end like Pitts to an offense already featuring Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, Atlanta has more pressing needs on the defensive side of the ball.
